Bring your browser bookmarks into one private library

Move an existing bookmark collection with an HTML file, preview it, and keep its folders.

Updated

You do not need to save every website again when you start using a bookmark manager. Stash can read a browser bookmark HTML export and create collections from its folder hierarchy. The import starts with a file you choose; it does not connect to your browser account or continuously sync browser bookmarks.

1. Export bookmarks from your browser

On your computer, open your browser's bookmark manager or library and look for the option to export bookmarks as HTML. Save that file somewhere you can find it. Keep a copy of the original export until you have checked the imported library.

Browser menus change, so use the current instructions for your browser: Chrome bookmark export or Firefox HTML bookmark backup. Choose a bookmark export, rather than a saved copy of a single web page.

2. Preview the file in Stash

  1. Sign in to your Stash account and open Import links.
  2. Choose the exported HTML file. If your browser downloaded an archive, unzip it first.
  3. Check the number of links found and open the preview to inspect URLs and folder paths.
  4. Choose Import when the preview contains the links you want to save.

Selecting a file only prepares the preview. Nothing is saved until you submit the import. If you exported a large library, the preview displays the first 100 links; the import considers all links in the selected file.

What happens to folders and duplicate links?

Browser export folders become Stash collections and sub-collections. A folder named Research inside Projects keeps that relationship. Links that already exist at the same normalized URL in your library are skipped, so importing a file again does not add another copy of each identical URL.

Different URLs can still point to similar content. Tracking parameters or different page addresses may make two links distinct. Check these manually if your old library already contains several versions of a page.

Limits and supported file types

  • Each file must be no larger than 3.8 MB and contain no more than 10,000 links. Split a larger export into smaller files.
  • Stash accepts browser HTML, supported JSON exports, CSV cells containing full URLs, and TXT link lists.
  • For a simple list, use one full https:// link per line. You can download an example TXT file.
  • If new links exceed the remaining space on your Free plan, Stash asks you to upgrade or explicitly import only the number that fits.

Importing saved links from another service

Some social-media data exports contain full links; others contain only IDs or omit saved items. Choose the saved-items file and check its preview. A full account export may also contain unrelated links from other activity. Stash imports the URLs present in the file, not the underlying videos, images or a complete offline copy of those pages.

Check the result and keep a backup

After import, open a few collections and links to confirm the structure looks right. Add tags or notes to the resources you use most, following the bookmark organization guide. You can export your Stash library from Settings as HTML or JSON when you want another copy. A bookmark export preserves links; it cannot keep an external page available if its owner removes it.
